Finds & research
Haniwa, pit chambers, and grave goods have been investigated at individual mounds, but should not be generalized across the whole group. Mound 1 has rows of haniwa and stone facing; its summit burial facility remains unexcavated.
Two views on the occupant
Archaeological view
An Early Kofun-period group of keyhole and round mounds that Kashiwara City defines as Mounds 1–10. Major construction began in the late 3rd century and ended by the mid-4th century. Mound 9, about 60m long, is considered the earliest; Mounds 3, 1, and 7 are each around 100m, and Mound 1 is about 110m long.
Imperial Household Agency view
This is not an Imperial Household Agency mausoleum. The group as a whole is not a National Historic Site; Tamateyama Mound 1 is a Kashiwara City-designated Historic Site.
Field notes
Mounds 1, 2, 3, and 7 are the principal surviving examples open to view. Conditions and access differ, so follow Kashiwara City’s walking map.
