3rd-century keyhole mound (Makimuku type) in Sakurai City. One of the most important sites for understanding the origin of keyhole-shaped mounds.The Makimuku group is sometimes called the birthplace of the keyhole mound.
Surveys by Sakurai City and the Kashihara Archaeological Research Institute as part of the Makimuku national historic site designation (2013). Burial facility: wooden outer coffin (mokkaku), a Yayoi-style burial. Little or no stone paving or haniwa confirmed. Burial details and grave goods unexcavated (mound partly altered by agricultural consolidation).
