84.8m scallop-shaped mound in Sakai City. Dated to the late 5th century.The name "Gobyo" derives from the nearby Gobyoyama Kofun (associated with Emperor Ojin). Scallop-shaped mounds feature a small square protrusion in front of the round section, thought to have served as a ritual space.
FY2008 ground-penetrating radar survey suggested a burial facility at the centre of the rear circle. FY2011 excavation confirmed two-tier rear-circle construction and haniwa rows on the terrace. A layer of grayish-white silt under the mound fill — a distinctive construction technique — was also identified. Surface-collected cylindrical and figural haniwa fragments are known; grave goods await investigation. Historic site restoration completed FY2024; open to visitors (including to climb) from April 26, 2025.
