Two views on the occupant
Archaeological view
The present round rise is about 20m across and 2m high and was designated with Prince Nagaya's tomb in 1901. An 1893 record notes haniwa fragments and megaliths, suggesting reuse of a Kofun-period mound, but its date and burial facility remain unresolved.
Imperial Household Agency view
Managed by the IHA (designated 1901) as the tomb of Princess Kibi, Prince Nagaya's consort who died with him in 729. The ~20m knoll pairs with his tomb (id:651) 150m away; Meiji-era finds of haniwa and megaliths suggest a reused kofun. The twin graves still convey the tragedy.
