Large round mound (~40m diameter) in Wakayama City — a Wakayama Prefectural Historic Site. 5th century; forms the "Kiinomoto Kofun Group" with the adjacent Shaka-no-Koshi Kofun (id:324). Iron swords, armour, and glass beads from the stone chamber indicate a powerful Kii chieftain controlling the Kinokawa River estuary.

Archaeological view
Large round mound ~40m in diameter, ~7m high, in Kiinomoto, Wakayama City. 5th century (Middle Kofun period). Forms the "Kiinomoto Kofun Group (Kamayama Group)" together with Shaka-no-Koshi Kofun (86m; id:324) and Chausuyama Kofun. The horizontal stone chamber yielded iron swords, arrowheads, armour fragments, cylindrical haniwa, and glass beads. Located on the plateau on the west bank of the Kinokawa River estuary, it is the tomb of a powerful Kii chieftain controlling river trade. Whereas the adjacent Shaka-no-Koshi is a keyhole mound, this large circular form illustrates the 5th-century trend toward larger round mounds.
