Finds & research
Multiple investigations have examined the extent of the mound and surrounding ditch. The cited city sources do not establish stone facing, haniwa, the central burial facility, or a grave assemblage.
Two views on the occupant
Archaeological view
A keyhole mound at Higashida, Sakurai. Six investigations have been conducted since 1992, and work from 2007 onward identified fill and the extent of the front. The waist and parts of the mound perimeter remain unresolved, so its full length still requires study.
Imperial Household Agency view
This is not an IHA mausoleum. It is protected within the Makimuku archaeological area, but Sakurai City’s conservation plan treats it as an area intended for future historic-site designation; current National Historic Site status is not confirmed.

The remains adjoin farmland and housing. Follow Sakurai City guidance and do not enter private land.
