Overview
A great Otokuni round mound designated for Emperor Kanmu's empress — beneath which a chieftain four centuries older actually rests. A fascinating palimpsest of the pre-Heian landscape.

Two views on the occupant
Archaeological view
A large two-tiered round mound, ~65m surviving (restored ~70m) and 7m high with stone paving, built at the end of the 4th century as part of the Otokuni chieftain line.
Imperial Household Agency view
Managed by the IHA as the Takabatake Mausoleum of Empress Fujiwara no Otomuro (d. 790), mother of Emperors Heizei and Saga — though the mound itself dates to c. 400, hence the "attributed" prefix.
Field notes
Worship from the oratory; walkable from Higashi-Muko Station and easily added to an Otokuni group circuit (id:287 etc.).
