Archaeological view
The mound at Ao, Iga, is now square in appearance. Iga City states that repairs since the Meiji period have obscured its original form. Cylindrical haniwa fragments from the nearby Nishihokkeji site are thought to come from this mound and suggest construction in the late 5th to early 6th century. The IHA manages it as the tomb of Ikohayawake-no-Mikoto, but the occupant has not been archaeologically identified.
